Could it be. I’ve been waiting for a follow-up or anything really to the Legacy of Kain series. It’s been too long. This is a franchise that should have kept going and made some great PS3 classics. Hope they keep the great voice talent of all the old games.

When I hear people say how over-hyped Final Fantasy VII is or that it’s not one of the best RPG’s ever created, I can’t help but think “what the fuck is wrong with you?” Okay, I’ll give you that the hype surrounding the 15 year old game is astronomical, but can you really judge this game by today’s standards, yes and no.

Graphically: No

No shit it’s not gonna compete with anything on the current market, it’s 15 years old. This was a game that used a new style of gaming at the time. When 3D character models and pre-rendered backgrounds was new ground and fmv cutscenes were in it’s infancy. The disproportionate character models may seem laughable now, but at the time this was an astounding accomplishment. Also if you’re judging a game based solely on it’s looks then you sir are a shallow piece of shit.

Gameplay: Yes

Of course you can’t compare it along side a current game just because so much more is possible now with current technology but it’s still fun. A battle system that follows the old JRPG style of turn based action may seem silly now, but the time also gave you the ability to play each battle like a chess game. You use each characters strength to compliment the team that you build throughout the game. You have a good amount of characters to choose from with varying abilities and strengths. Not to mention the materia you can arm any character with to turn them into whatever type of fighter you can want. I personally think that battle system still holds up today and is funner than a lot of new games on the market. I’d take fighting a giant monster created by the planet to defend itself against Mako Drilling Assholes over glitched out dragons in Skyrim. There are also many dragons in FF7 you can murder as well. So you lose Skyrim. But gameplay is not the best element to judge FF7 on anyway.

Characters: Fuck yes

Now when people say Cloud is wack or weak, exactly what is this based off of? Think about it. The character Cloud starts off as a badass ex-Soldier mercenary taking on any job for the right price. He’s cocky, sure of himself and he’s pretty much not afraid of jack shit. For godsakes he get’s right into a black man’s face who’s twice his size, made entirely of muscle, is part of a gang of terrorists who bomb government facilities and has a chaingun for an arm and demands money for the job he was part of and then doubles the price of his services for the next one. Excuse yourself from the world of men if you don’t think this man is badass. Don’t let the Kingdom Hearts and Advent Children version of Cloud fool you. This guy eats Chuck Norris’ for breakfast with a side of Mako to wash him down with. Throw in some major personality issues like thinking he’s actually a different person through a good chunk of the game because he was mentally traumatized after murdering his mentor who completely lost his mind and wanted to create a utopia that only him and his extra-terrestrial “mother” could live in. The guy heard voices in his head while leading his band of terrorists around the globe to stop an almost mythical enemy at the same time they were fighting a corrupt corporation with it’s own personal army. Cloud was deeply flawed, which is what made his character so compelling. On the outside he seemed sure of himself and well put together. But on the inside you eventually realized that this person was so traumatized from his past that he literally had to create multiple personalities to cope with being the only one who survived that trauma. He took on the persona of his best friend who was gunned down shortly before arriving at the city him and his companion were to start there new lives together. Then he slowly regains himself throughout the course of the game, losing more friends and eventually finding out the truth about his past and accepting it to stop the world being destroyed. There hasn’t been a character quite like Cloud since he first came to us.

Sephiroth

For such an awesome hero like Cloud, Sephiroth was the perfect anti-thesis to him. The guy was everything that Cloud wanted to be. The greatest Soldier who ever lived, with god-like abilities that no one could come close to. This guy brushed aside dragons like broccoli he didn’t order. He literally impaled a serpent the size of a train. He died twice and still came back to ruin Cloud’s life. He took everything from this guy, his best friend, his girl, his reason for living and still pretty much ruined the world even though Cloud stopped his plan. Another reason why Sephiroth was so likeable like most villains is he started out as a good guy. He fought for good until he realized his entire existence was a lie and that he was created in a lab to be an instrument of destruction. Come on, being driven mad after reading your “father’s” research alone in the basement for a week. That’s some fucked up shit. Sephiroth also worked so well cause he was intangible the entire game. He literally wasn’t in the game until the last battle. He was almost like this ghost or myth. Something so powerful and terrifying that he only existed in your mind. And honestly there isn’t anything more terrifying than an idea of something that you can’t touch. Something so unreachable that there is no defense against. His character as the villain of the story was perfect. All the villains that followed, Ultimecia, Sin, Seymour, can’t even compare to what Sephiroth represented. A villain that you hate for all his crimes, but respect cause he can do whatever the fuck he wants.

The other characters also speak for themselves. They all had deep backgrounds and history’s that develop over the course of the game. The only Final Fantasy that had a more well rounded group of characters was Final Fantasy VI.

Story: OMG YES

I think I pretty much covered why the story is awesome in the character section but let’s give a brief description. You start as a mercenary working for some activists (terrorists) who are trying to stop an evil energy corporation(Shinra Company) from sucking the planet dry of it’s life energy. You realize that the Shinra Company is only a small villain in the grand scheme of things when the Legendary Soldier Sephiroth returns from the dead to fuck shit up for everyone including Shinra to reach a utopia that he and his extra-terrestrial mother will live in. Your gf Aeris is the last surviving Ancient(Cetra) who coexisted with the planet in harmony before they were all wiped out, in part by Jenova and in part by Shinra hunting them for power and weapons. You fight Shinra’s army, the Turks(Shinra’s goon sqaud), Monsters, crazed old friends, double agents in your group, Sephiroth(eventually), and giant monsters created by the planet to fuck your day up, oh ya and a giant meteor hurdling towards the planet cause god hates you. The story is well thought out, with deep characters with there own personal flaws, incredible action sequences, espionage, terrorist bombings, and enough heartfelt moments that you can’t help but feel loss when characters die. When one of the characters death becomes one of the most remembered moments in gaming history, you know your doing something right. The story is second to none. And if you’ve never given the game a chance cause it feels dated or too old, then just stop playing games cause you have no idea what you’re missing.

This game has everyting. It’s smart and well executed. It’s a relic of a now gone era when story and gameplay went hand in hand to creating a great game. Square hasn’t been the same since they merged with Enix. I doubt they will ever be again. But when they were just Sqauresoft, they made some of the most compelling interactive stories that no other developer could match. If you think FF7 is overrated then you are a fool. It’s a great game which story is timeless. You can’t help but feel for the characters and their plight. Games today have lost that, mostly in regards to Japanese Developers. Maybe they don’t care or are just too busy with anime to keep up with the rise of Western Developers. There are still awesome games today, but none has gotten me as emotionally involved with the story or characters since the days of FF7 and the Golden Age of JRPG on the PS1. Hopefully there is a second coming, but I doubt it. Do yourself a favor and play this amazing game if you’ve never picked it up before. You’ll be glad you did. Dont go into it with grand expectations, but just appreciate it for what it is. A great game.

So I’m gonna wait an extra week for the Vita. It’s gonna be cheaper and it won’t come with a game I probably won’t play after the first time. I don’t make these decisions easily since I need everything first and earlier than other people. But it’s a better deal and most of the games come out on that day anyway. Ugh.. I hate waiting.

I was thinking the 3DS was more gimmick than actual game machine but this game has changed my mind. I didn’t think it was possible to have fun on portable gaming machines since the days of Pokemon Red and Blue but this game is awesome. Other games have been pretty great too, the 3d is actually pretty cool. The only problems with it is it’s not a durable as the original DS. Also it’s hard to see the 3D when the screen even moves a little bit. Overall I’m loving it and the Vita is coming out this Wednesday. Portable gaming machines are back big time.
